🎉 Postdoc Appreciation Week 2025 Wrap-Up 🎉 As we close out Postdoc Appreciation Week Germany 2025, we reflect on an incredible week filled with learning, networking, and lots of postdoc appreciation! This year postdocs were able choose from 100+ events hosted by 60+ institutions, all of which highlighted and celebrated the vital role postdocs play for German research and academia. 🌟 Some PAW 2025 Highlights: Professional Development Workshops: From mastering grant proposal writing to navigating the intricacies of the WissZeitVG, these sessions provided invaluable insights for postdocs at every career stage. Diverse Career Path Sessions: Events highlighted various paths in or outside of academia, helping postdocs map their journeys with clarity and confidence. Networking and Community Building: We had a total of 17 Postdoc Meet-Ups this year, which is a new record! Innovative Discussions: Panels on science hostility, on inclusive and diverse scientific communities, or motherhood and academia provided critical platforms for discussing challenges on the path to a more inclusive academia for all. On monday, we kicked off the Postdoc Appreciation Week Germany 2025 with a fantastic start! 🎉 A big thank you to Daniel Pizzolato for his Kick-Off Talk on ‚Navigating Academia: Postdocs at the Crossroads of Quality, Prestige, and Precarity.‘ Daniel demonstrated not only the drawback of quantity over quality (e.g. salami slicing, lack of reproducibility and erosion of trust) but shared also responsible alternatives. Among them: 💡 Preregister studies; report null/negative findings 💡 Share data and code openly (e.g. via zenodo) 💡 Invest time in open practives to increase visibility We also discussed suitable strategies for postdocs – and also the challenges, since quantitative measures should not be completely ignored either. 🌟 PAW Kick-Off Event on | Sept. 15 at 10-11 a.m. | online🌟 Join us for our kick-off event next monday titled ‘Navigating Academia: Postdocs at the Crossroads of Quality, Prestige, and Precarity.’ What is it all about? 🤔 💡Traditional metrics, such as publication count, journal impact factors, and citation numbers, continue to dominate how researchers are being assessed. 💡Yet, there is growing recognition that these measures do not fully capture the quality and integrity of research. Initiatives like the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and CoARA - Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment are at the forefront of advocating for a shift in research assessment. 💡For postdocs, the link between academic assessment and career progression is particularly crucial, since their chances of securing a long-term academic career often depend on traditional research assessment measures. ➡️This leads to a dilemma of research success versus career success for postdocs.
