Fifteen Bold Ideas. One Boost for Each: Meet the Klaus Tschira Boost Fund Fellows 2025 With the KT Boost 6 series, we’re spotlighting fifteen researchers whose projects push the boundaries of their fields. Each Hashtag #KTBoostfellow represents not only bold scientific ideas but also the curiosity, persistence, and leadership that shape the future of research. Three Questions to… Sanne Lidewij Maas, Postdoctoral Researcher at RWTH Aachen University, Cardiovascular Research ❓ What if we could #predict #heart #attacks and strokes before they happen — and stop them in time? Sanne’s project investigates how certain proteins, called kinases, contribute to the rupture of artery plaques that cause heart attacks and strokes. Using a kinomics platform, she aims to find early warning markers and pave the way for better treatments. ❓What problem does your research tackle? #Heart attacks and strokes, driven by clogged arteries caused by atherosclerotic plaque rupture, remains the leading cause of death #globally. Existing treatments only lower the risk by 30-40%, highlighting the urgent #need for #new #therapies. Kinases, proteins that regulate vital cellular processes, play a key role in disease progression. Using a kinomics platform, I aim to identify specific kinases involved in plaque rupture and assess their potential as biomarkers to predict heart attacks or strokes. ➡️ This research could lead to #innovative #treatments and a non-invasive test for #earlier #risk #detection. ❓How does the #KTBoostFund support you and your #project idea? The Klaus Tschira Boost Fund helps me develop #independent #research ideas and explore new approaches that would otherwise remain untapped. It allows me to connect with researchers from different fields, encouraging #collaborations and fresh #perspectives to #improve my work. The funding also supports my leadership growth by enabling me to #mentor a PhD student. With this extra support in the lab, we can #accelerate #experiments and gather vital data to address heart disease, one of the leading global causes of death. Without this funding, these opportunities would remain unrealized. If I had more time for things other than research, I … …would love to dedicate more time to #dancing #salsa. It combines my love for #sport, #music, and #culture. Attending international salsa festivals is the perfect blend of all these interests. _______________________________ 🚀The Klaus Tschira Boost Fund is a joint program by GSO and Klaus Tschira Stiftung offering flexible funding and career development to promote researchers in the #Biology, #Chemistry, #ComputerScience, #Geosciences, #Mathematics, #Neurosciences, or #Physics. #BoostFellows #KTBoostFund

Congratulations to our #KTBoost Fellows! Science Needs Women. And We’re Proud to See Two of Our Fellows Leading the Way. This year’s “For Women in Science” Award by L'Oréal, Deutsche UNESCO-Kommission, and the German Humboldt Network recognized four researchers whose work is not only excellent, but transformative. Among them: two of our very own #KTBoostFellows. ➡️ Dr. Casey Paquola (Forschungszentrum Jülich). Her research maps how the developing brain shapes #mental #health — and how MRI data and AI might one day predict psychiatric risks and enable early, targeted interventions. ➡️ Dr. Jingyuan Xu (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT). Her work pioneers #sustainable #cooling #systems with shape-memory alloys, aiming to replace greenhouse-gas-heavy compressors with environmentally friendly, energy-efficient alternatives. We find that #scientific #breakthroughs do not come from isolated effort, but from researchers who are given the #time, #space, and #trust to pursue ambitious ideas. The Klaus Tschira Boost Fund exists for exactly this reason: to provide early-career scientists with the freedom to think boldly and act independently. Our warmest congratulations also go to the other two awardees: Dr. Line Dahl Muradi // Næsborg (Universität Münster), and Rana Hussein Ali, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt)!
