𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗦𝗢? 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀? If you have ever asked yourself that question, you do have a point. Originally founded as a network to support German scholars abroad to return to Germany, our mission and portfolio has adapted to changes in the academic system and to the evolving needs of researchers: ➡ Today, we still help Germans to return to Germany, but that’s only one part of the story. We 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 who want to stay in Germany and offer 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 of postdocs of ALL backgrounds. And we do that independently and at eye-level. ❗ However, what we actually do and offer not always shines through in our brand and communication. That is why the GSO team, our new board, and representatives from our advisory board and members sat together to rethink GSO. How can we communicate better what we do? How can we reach people who benefit from what we do? What is our added value for them? Even if it was just kick off to a journey, we want to share a couple of quotes of from our survey with researchers and other important stakeholders, which made us very happy to hear: 🔸 "It's all about us." 🔸 "You were here at a crucial point of my career." 🔸 "You provide a space to develop personally, not just careerwise." Thank you to our executive board members Dr. Jacob Eder, Stephanie Dittmer, Kerstin Dübner-Gee, Jeffrey M. Peck, Florian Bruhns from our advisory board and association member Marcel S. Pawlowski for putting their heads together with us! ❓ What do you think? What has your association with GSO been? Stay tuned as we progress on this journey!

Last week I was invited to the conference "Portugal, o pais onde vais querer estar" organised by the Associação Business Roundtable Portugal, where I had the opportunity to speak with the Portuguese PM Luis Montenegro about the reasons qualified people move abroad in the search for career opportunities. What I found in the UK was far from an easy life, and leaving my home country was a difficult and well pondered decision. But here are some of the reasons that made me stay in London for this long: - An open, more inclusive social fabric that supports and celebrates individual success - A dynamic economy that provided me with opportunities for growth, both in my career and on a personal level - Excellent resources in my area of AI, Data and Analytics, in tune with large investments in R&D both at an academic and industrial level - A simpler set of fiscal rules that do not punish career growth I am proud of being Portuguese and thankful for the quality of life and excellent education I was able to receive as I grew up. But, in my view, for Portugal to be more competitive it needs a few years of hard work that is focused on not just immediate returns, but mostly long-term change: - Higher investment in Academia and R&D; we have some of the best scientists in the world, and fail to capitalise on this - A shift away from the risk-averse mindset that makes us have a fear of success; this takes us further away from a proper meritocratic system and curbs growth - Foundational reforms in 4 main pillars: Education, Health, Economy and Justice, so we can effectively distance ourselves from the dangerous populist, ill-informed far-right movements, while supporting both people and companies and ensuring the Justice system is fast, fair and accountable for their actions. Thank you to the Portuguese Prime Minister and Rosália Cubal Pena who joined me on this panel, and to Pedro Ginjeira Nascimento, Ângela Correia and the rest of the ABRP team for the invite and for organising an event that shone a light on not just the problems, but also the great work that is done on a daily basis throughout Portugal. If you'd like to see the interview we gave to TVI (in Portuguese) you can find the link in the comments.

𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: 𝗠𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 + 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧) The German American Conference at Harvard (in short: GAC) is known for fostering transformative discussions and innovative ideas, bridging cultures to strengthen the transatlantic alliance. This year's theme, 'HARD CONVERSATIONS,' encapsulates the event's essence: addressing challenging topics to drive meaningful change. The GAC not only offers an exceptional team and stimulating dialogues but also provides a unique glimpse into another culture. It emphasizes the importance of strong relationships in the realms of economy, politics, and beyond. I firmly believe that a robust partnership between Germany and the USA is crucial, benefiting both nations. 𝙼𝚢 𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚘𝚗𝚊𝚕 𝚎𝚡𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎 has been enriching so far. I have built lasting friendships, connected internationally, gained new insights, and strengthened i.a. the bond between WHU and its alumni who are already studying at Harvard. These experiences have inspired me to take a more active role in shaping the future of this conference. 𝙼𝚢 𝚐𝚘𝚊𝚕 is to unite people from diverse organizations, associations, universities and last but not least my university, WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, for this remarkable event. I’m thrilled to collaborate with our outstanding team to ensure this conference is unforgettable for all involved. 𝐓𝐚𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝. 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭. 𝙹𝚘𝚒𝚗 𝚞𝚜 in strengthening transatlantic bonds. Your support is vital in making GAC 2024 extraordinary! -- PS: Thanks for the collaboration! This year team is organized and led by Stephanie Armbruster, Thilo Kerkhoff, and Lukas Manske, along with many others (Emily Hackett, Frederik Braun, Jonas Bruns, Tamsyn Karlotta Garinet, Niklas Engel, Robert Havkin, Sophie Tiefenbacher, Sue Mitschke, Kai Krautter, Paul Künzle, Thomas H., Anita Shanker, Nandita Suri, and many more). PPS: We are still seeking additional high-level speakers and fundraising opportunities. If you have any leads or would like to support the GAC in any way, please reach out to me (or any one of us). -- Here's a photo from last year that captures a snippet of the event. #mywhu #exchange #germanamericanconference #harvard #transatlanticexchange #vallendargoesboston

Small changes, big results! Featuring Best Diplomats again as our Client of the Week. You may remember them from an earlier post. Best Diplomats is an amazing organization that trains future diplomats through international conferences. They provide a platform for young leaders to engage with global issues and work on impactful solutions. Here’s what we did for them this time: Room allocation improvements: Updated their system to make sure room assignments are error-free. Enhanced check-in process: Added manual entry option for delegates facing issues with passport scans. Simplified room management: Simplified the room assignment process, making it easier to handle multiple room-sharing requests and prioritize correctly. The Results: ✅ Faster and smoother room allocation and check-ins ✅ Fewer errors in room assignments ✅ Less need for manual intervention These updates were all about making things simpler for both delegates and organizers, so their conferences run as smoothly as possible.

Attended my first EGOS (European Group for Organizational Studies) colloquium in Milan. Presented my work-in-progress with my co-author Sari. A pleasure to be part of this community. The dynamic relationship between organizations and sustainability are at the forefront of interests in academic research. There was a lot to learn as academics from over 90 countries showcased their current work and insights on time, innovation, and sustainability. Interesting discoveries of innovation and how time-related risks in sustainable actions impact organizations globally. There are many complex issues to be solved that require rigorous research and collaboration between academia and industry practioners in the critical transition towards a more sustainable economy. More so, the consequences of making (or not making) actions and their long-term impacts need transparency so that organizations can make informative decisions.

9th class me who binge-watched every single video there was on Youtube about 'Harvard' would have shrieked with happiness at any sentence with the combination of/containing the words "Congratulations", "accepted", "Harvard", being dropped in my inbox. To be perfectly candid, 19-year old also did. While, I may not have ever applied there, (as the 9th class me dreamt) and this is not my acceptance letter to the university, HPAIR still means a great deal to me. The Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations is a renowned platform that brings together the youth and international leaders from multiple domains, to engage in impactful dialogues, majorly pertaining to issues in the Asia-Pacific Region. Now, I'm sure many you might have already heard a great deal about HPAIR, but did you know about the HPAIR virtual conference? Even with all that zeal, it was not until very late that I discovered about this opportunity, or, rather, a viable alternative, as you may call it. HPAIR virtual summit is only happening for the second time this year, and here are some of the reasons why you can consider it as an equally important and viable alternative to the in-person conference while applying: 1. Accessibility: If you're someone like me who can not fly out to Bangkok(or any other future host Asian country) due to commitments or other reasons, the virtual conference provides a fantastic opportunity to engage in these dialogues from anywhere. 2. Extended Application Period: The application window for the virtual conference runs a little longer as compared to the offline conference. Warning though, don't take it as a sign to procrastinate your application as competition equally multifold in the virtual conference due to greater accessibility and convenience of the virtual mode. :) 3. Affordability: You can always save out on the bank balance through the virtual format, escaping all that transportation and accommodation expenses. All in all, I'm deeply grateful to Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) for giving me this wonderful opportunity to further explore my interest in International Relations. Lastly, a fun fact, the application process is pretty thoughtful and seemed extremely thorough and genuine. The questions were designed to make one reflect honestly on issues we are genuinely passionate about. :) To HPAIR'24!
