Networks, Information, and Empowerment: Marieke Üzüm and I tried to share as much as possible of that with researchers during the #GAIN19. We met incredibly smart and interesting people - that's what makes our work at GSO German Scholars Organization e.V. so rewarding and fun. And thanks to Florian Bruhns for the great workshop inputs and the photo!

Last year, I was delighted to be chosen as one of German Scholars Organization e.V. (GSO) Leadership Academy participants in 2023. I had the privilege of spending two transformative weeks in Berlin and Darmstadt. The program not only deepened my understanding of leadership but also provided a platform for me to connect with inspiring individuals. This experience was a turning point in my career, and I believe it can be for you too. 🚨 Now it is your turn: The GSO has announced its open call for applications for the 8th Leadership Academy. As someone who has personally benefited from the experience, I strongly encourage German-speaking researchers living abroad or those who have returned to Germany within the past year to consider applying for this opportunity. Learn more about the GSO, the Leadership Academy, and the application process (deadline: April 23): ▶ https://lnkd.in/exRRPQA3 Thank you for the incredible organization in 2023, Anne Schreiter, Ph.D. & Saskia H. (German Scholars Organization e.V. (GSO))! Thank you for the exceptional leadership workshops last year, Tania Lieckweg & Katrin Glatzel (osb international Consulting AG)! This year's program is supported by the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and in partnership with TU9 – German Universities of Technology. #leadership #neverstoplearning #empowerment #gsola #gsola7 #GSOLA07 #gsola8 #GSOLA08 #LSA #leadershipinacademia

🧭 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 Luck definitely plays a role in our career paths, but as Pasteur hinted, it's not just about luck — it's about being prepared: understanding what matters to you in a profession and knowing the skills you can bring to it are important for spotting and taking advantage of opportunities. How can you do this? 👉 Start by determining your professional skill sets and learn how to communicate them. ⚖ Remember to constantly evaluate which skills are most important to you, whether you're considering a career in academia or elsewhere. What does your day-to-day work look like? What activities do you actually enjoy doing (not only which activities you do well)? This self-awareness will guide you towards the right career path. And don’t forget: The skills you have gained in academia aren't limited to a career to become a professor; they can also be applied to many other career paths. Such skill sets might include: 🔸 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝗽𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: Knowing how to manage research projects and teams without an official role of authority prepares you for 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴 in all different kinds of settings. 🔸 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 & 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Analysing complex problems and critical assessment prepares you for jobs in 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩, 𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘺. 🔸 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀: Where data is king, handling and understanding data prepares you for 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥𝘴, 𝘦.𝘨. 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩, 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩, 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴. 🔸 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: Publishing papers, crafting narratives, mentoring students, and teaming up globally prepare you for 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘏𝘙, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘴. Find more skills in our slides! ❗ Dr. Birte Seffert & Anne Schreiter, Ph.D. from our GSO Team know the challenges and the crucial moments of academics from their own experience. Both transitioned from academia to research management and the nonprofit sector.

Dann bring uns unbedingt miteinander in Kontakt. Bewerbungen bis 17. April möglich.

The #Leadership Academy is a unique opportunity for researchers abroad or those who have returned or come to Germany less than a year ago. You need to be able to follow the program in German, but do not have to be a German citizen. We welcome all disciplines. You not only gain knowledge and tools specifically for leadership of all kind (including leading yourself, leading laterally and upwards as well as leading employees), but also a helpful and sustainable network of wonderful people at all career levels. Please share or consider applying yourself - if you are unsure, reach out to my colleague Kübra Kananathan or me.
📣 Leadership Academy 8: Call for Applications The GSO invites German-speaking postdoctoral researchers from 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 to apply for one of 𝟮𝟱 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 in our 8th cohort. German citizenship is not required. The program is designed for researchers outside of Germany or those who have recently returned (max 1 year). The Leadership Academy, supported by the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and in partnership with TU9 – German Universities of Technology, provides an opportunity for those aiming to expand their influence within the research community and enhance leadership skills. The interactive curriculum in Berlin and Heidelberg provides professional self-evaluation, systematic career planning, and in-person modules alongside other components. These modules are facilitated by experienced consultants from the scientific community and business sectors. For more information and to submit your application, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/dWKEiqm 📸 In the picture our alumnus Frederic Roemschied. ⏳ 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟯, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 #LeadershipAcademy #CareerDevelopment #GSOLA8 #FutureLeaders

What makes skills #futureskills? Which skills will become less relevant? What future are we actually preparing for? Can skills help to foster values? And what does that all mean for universities, lecturers, and students? Thankfully, I could ask experts Ena Voûte, Katrin Redmann, and Jose F. Monserrat all these questions. Here's what I learned: ➡️Social skills and an attitude that connects skills AND values, such as social justice or freedom, will become extremely important, especially as technical developments move forward ➡️Creating personalized learning journeys will forster diversity and will force universities and policy makers to rethink certificates and comparability of degrees ➡️We don't actually know what we have to prepare for and have to be comfortable with the unknown ➡️"Memory is death" (learning by heart becomes less relevant) and certain in-depth math skills will decrease in relevance ➡️And of course, AI will change a lot. The panel talk was part of a meeting of members of ENHANCE Alliance at Technische Universität Berlin. Thanks to Naveed Syed for the invitation, Andrea Zestic for the support, and Grant Penny for the helpful exchange. _____________________ 📸 Credits Julia Sommer/ ENHANCE Alliance Original post in the first comment

I met Verena Claudia Haage a few years ago when she was part of a group of young female researchers who started a network aiming at fostering sustainable #leadership in #academia. ➡️ She keeps advocating for postdocs besides her work as a scientist herself - please support her project by adding your perspective! #science #transformation #innovation #researchculture #leadership #mentorship #mentalhealth #futureacademia
Why do Postdocs leave labs? How many of us Postdocs go through transitioning from one Research Group to another? What are the major causes and the consequential impact of this phenomenon amid the ongoing Postdoc Crisis? In collaboration with eLife Sciences Publications, Ltd. during my time as an eLife Sciences Publications, Ltd. Ambassador, I conceptualized a survey to capture and quantify this global phenomenon. For reasons of linguistic equity and inclusivity, the survey is translated into 6 languages (English, French, Spanish, Hindi, Mandarin and Arabic). If you are a Postdoc or you know a community of Postdocs, please take part in the survey and/or share it with your network! The aim here is to shed light on under-researched parts of science itself and to work towards a better understanding and improvement of the current system. https://lnkd.in/eZ7dDejc Thanks for your support. #science #transformation #innovation #researchculture #leadership #mentorship #mentalhealth #futureacademia
