Bei der GSO darf ich immer wieder wirklich tolle Menschen kennenlernen und wiedertreffen, wie hier am Montag beim Event der "Next Generation University Initiative". Marcel S. Pawlowski & Dr. Martin R. Lichtenthaler sind Alumni unserer Programme, Dr. Mridul Agrawal ist Beiratsmitglied der GSO und war u.a. Sparringpartner bei unserer Leadership Academy (LSA). Deren Wirkungsanalyse hat ergeben, dass 84% der 175 LSA-Alumni noch in Kontakt sind. Solche nachhaltigen Netzwerke aufzubauen, ist eine große Freude - ich gehe auch gern Kaffeetrinken, meldet euch, wenn ihr in Berlin seid!
What are #career pathways of #academics? This week we happened to gather four members of the GSO community with different stories at a conference about the future of universities in Berlin. 🎤The event was moderated by Dr. Martin R. Lichtenthaler, alumnus of our Leadership Academy and a former postdoc in Chemistry, who co-founded Mighty Real, a company that offers interactive trainings and event hosting. 🚀Dr. Mridul Agrawal serves as advisory board member of the GSO and was one of the panelists at the event. Mridul co-founded iuvando Health while he was still a postdoc and medical doctor. He is now a full-time entrepreneur. 🔭Marcel S. Pawlowski is a member of GSO as an association as well as an alumnus of the Leadership Academy and the #KTBoostFund. He is a group leader at Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP). Together with Anne Schreiter, Ph.D. he was invited to share his perspective within the Next Generation University initiative of RWTH Aachen University that hosted the event. 🪴Anne Schreiter, Ph.D. became GSO's director after a postdoc in Sociology and another job in the nonprofit sector. Kübra Kananathan und ich haben uns mit dem #WissZeitVG auseinandergesetzt und festgestellt: Wenn man als Wissenschaftler*in nachvollziehen möchte, was das Gesetz und die Reform denn nun konkret bedeuten, braucht man viel Zeit, man sollte sehr gut Deutsch verstehen und vertiefte Kenntnisse im Arbeitsrecht haben. In der Regel ist das nicht der Fall. Die Folgen (das bekommen wir in der Beratung mit): ➡️Große Verunsicherung - bei PhDs und Postdocs bzw. Promovierten ("Ist mein Vertrag jetzt noch gültig?", "Kann ich mein Projekt dann überhaupt fertigstellen und schaffen?", "Was, wenn meine Experimente nicht alle klappen?", "I have no idea that this is something I needed to consider...") - bei (ebenfalls oft selbst befristet beschäftigten) Gruppenleitungen ("Darf ich denn jetzt mit dem Postdoc planen und darf ich sie weiter beschäftigen?", "Worauf muss ich achten, wenn ich jemanden neu einstellen will?", "Die HR bei uns weiß auch nicht weiter - es gibt keinerlei Guidelines.") ➡️Notlösungen und noch mehr Intransparenz - ("Dann muss ich halt anders auf die Drittmittel-Projekte aufteilen und Person X dann für 6 Monate hier herschieben und dann wieder zurück.") ➡️Frustration ("Das geht doch vollkommen an der Realität von Forschung und Wissenschaft vorbei.", "Wenn es wenigstens Klarheit gäbe, was denn das nun praktisch bedeutet - es ist ein Chaos.", "Die Admin nimmt damit so überhand, dass ich nicht mehr zum Forschen komme.") ✅Daher unser Versuch einer Einordnung und Ressourcensammlung. Auch wenn wir gut Deutsch verstehen, sind wir keine Arbeitsrechtler, haben auch nur bedingt Zeit und freuen uns daher über Hinweise und Anmerkungen aus der Community!

Was machen wir eigentlich bei der German Scholars Organization e.V. (GSO)? Und wie können wir unsere Marke besser kommunizieren - gerade nachdem sich in den letzten Jahren unsere Zielgruppe und unsere Angebote verändert und entwickelt haben? Wir haben bei Wissenschaftler*innen aus der Beratung und den Programmen und auch bei Stakeholdern nachgefragt und viel diskutiert - und den Kern herausgeschält. Einiges ist noch zu tun und die Ergebnisse präsentieren wir später im Jahr. Wir danken den Teilnehmenden der Umfrage, unserem Vorstand Stephanie Dittmer, Kerstin Dübner-Gee, Jeffrey M. Peck und Dr. Jacob Eder und dem Team, unserem Mitglied und Vertreter der Zielgruppe Marcel S. Pawlowski und unserem Beiratsmitglied Florian Bruhns, der uns auch die tolle Location inkl. sonniger Dachterrasse zur Verfügung gestellt hat. 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗦𝗢? 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀? If you have ever asked yourself that question, you do have a point. Originally founded as a network to support German scholars abroad to return to Germany, our mission and portfolio has adapted to changes in the academic system and to the evolving needs of researchers: ➡ Today, we still help Germans to return to Germany, but that’s only one part of the story. We 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 who want to stay in Germany and offer 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 of postdocs of ALL backgrounds. And we do that independently and at eye-level. ❗ However, what we actually do and offer not always shines through in our brand and communication. That is why the GSO team, our new board, and representatives from our advisory board and members sat together to rethink GSO. How can we communicate better what we do? How can we reach people who benefit from what we do? What is our added value for them? Even if it was just kick off to a journey, we want to share a couple of quotes of from our survey with researchers and other important stakeholders, which made us very happy to hear: 🔸 "It's all about us." 🔸 "You were here at a crucial point of my career." 🔸 "You provide a space to develop personally, not just careerwise." Die Highlights in meinem Job sind definitiv die Events mit Wissenschaftler*innen - allesamt interessante Persönlichkeiten. Sie ein Stück begleiten und unterstützen zu können, ist der vielzitierte "Purpose", der dann ganz konkret wird. Daher wärmt mir ein Post wie der von Ulrike Boehm ganz besonders das Herz. Ulrike ist Alumna der GSO #Leadership Academy mit inzwischen 175 Alumni. Besonders eindrücklich sind mir bei dem Programm auch jedes Mal die Begegnungen mit außergewöhnlichen Gästen, darunter im letzten Jahr: 💡 Johannes Vogel, der sich Zeit für den Austausch mit den Fellows zu #Führung und #Wissenschaftskommunikation genommen hat (nach einer abendlichen Führung im besucherleeren Museum für Naturkunde Berlin) 💡 Dr. Alexandra Heidle-Chhatwani, Nicole Shea und Jeffrey M. Peck, die offen aus ihren persönlichen Arbeitskontexten und von ihren Führungserfahrungen berichteten. 💡 Das tolle Team der Schader-Stiftung, das uns ins Fußballstadion, ins Polizeipräsidium und in ein Wohnheim für wohnungslose Männer vermittelte und Führung aus ganz anderen Perspektiven erlebbar machte. ➡️ Noch bis zum 23.4. können sich Wissenschaftler*innen mit guten Deutschkenntnissen für das Vollstipendium bewerben - die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft ist NICHT notwendig. Last year, I was delighted to be chosen as one of German Scholars Organization e.V. (GSO) Leadership Academy participants in 2023. I had the privilege of spending two transformative weeks in Berlin and Darmstadt. The program not only deepened my understanding of leadership but also provided a platform for me to connect with inspiring individuals. 🧭 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 Luck definitely plays a role in our career paths, but as Pasteur hinted, it's not just about luck — it's about being prepared: understanding what matters to you in a profession and knowing the skills you can bring to it are important for spotting and taking advantage of opportunities. How can you do this? 👉 Start by determining your professional skill sets and learn how to communicate them. ⚖ Remember to constantly evaluate which skills are most important to you, whether you're considering a career in academia or elsewhere. What does your day-to-day work look like? What activities do you actually enjoy doing (not only which activities you do well)? This self-awareness will guide you towards the right career path. And don’t forget: The skills you have gained in academia aren't limited to a career to become a professor; they can also be applied to many other career paths. The #Leadership Academy is a unique opportunity for researchers abroad or those who have returned or come to Germany less than a year ago. You need to be able to follow the program in German, but do not have to be a German citizen. We welcome all disciplines. You not only gain knowledge and tools specifically for leadership of all kind (including leading yourself, leading laterally and upwards as well as leading employees), but also a helpful and sustainable network of wonderful people at all career levels. 📣 Leadership Academy 8: Call for Applications The GSO invites German-speaking postdoctoral researchers from 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 to apply for one of 𝟮𝟱 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 in our 8th cohort. German citizenship is not required. The program is designed for researchers outside of Germany or those who have recently returned (max 1 year). Auch wenn ich gerne behaupte, dass Berlin anlässlich meines Geburtstags den 8. März zum gesetzlichen Feiertag erklärt hat, hat eine andere Frau damit zu tun. Clara Zetkin ist eine der Wegbereiterinnen des Internationalen Frauentags. In Deutschland ist sie nicht überall bekannt, obwohl sie eine wirklich außergewöhnliche, wenn auch umstrittene, Frau war: Politische Aktivistin und Sozialistin, alleinerziehende Mutter, verwitwet und geschieden, Freundin von Rosa Luxemburg, Alterspräsidentin im Reichstag, erst in der SPD und später KPD-Abgeordnete und glühende Gegnerin der NSDAP. Sie hatte Redeangst, war chronisch krank und ein Workaholic. Ein lesenswertes Kurzporträt verlinke ich im ersten Kommentar. Für Zetkin war die Idee des Frauentags vor allem eine Frage der sozialen Gerechtigkeit und eine der Arbeiterinnen und Arbeiter. Und sie sah, »dass die Arbeiterinnen sich nur mit besseren Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen überhaupt politisch engagieren konnten.« Daher kann man sich Clara Zetkins Haltung im Großen und im Kleinen, nicht nur am 8. März, nicht nur als Frau und nicht nur auf LinkedIn zum Vorbild nehmen: »Man konnte über alles mit ihr sprechen: Erziehungsschwierigkeiten mit den Kindern, Ehenöte, Politik, Frauenfragen oder Bücher. Immer wusste sie eine Antwort und nie hatte ich bei ihr das Gefühl, dass sie sich über die Fragenden erhaben fühlte. What makes skills #futureskills? Which skills will become less relevant? What future are we actually preparing for? Can skills help to foster values? And what does that all mean for universities, lecturers, and students? Thankfully, I could ask experts Ena Voûte, Katrin Redmann, and Jose F. Monserrat all these questions. Here's what I learned: ➡️Social skills and an attitude that connects skills AND values, such as social justice or freedom, will become extremely important, especially as technical developments move forward ➡️Creating personalized learning journeys will forster diversity and will force universities and policy makers to rethink certificates and comparability of degrees ➡️We don't actually know what we have to prepare for and have to be comfortable with the unknown ➡️"Memory is death" (learning by heart becomes less relevant) and certain in-depth math skills will decrease in relevance ➡️And of course, AI will change a lot. The panel talk was part of a meeting of members of ENHANCE Alliance at Technische Universität Berlin.
